As part of a larger effort to reduce combined sewer overflows in the area, an existing detention basin located on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the City of Fort Wright's property was retrofitted to reduce stormwater runoff and create a nature park for residents. The parks are designed for passive recreational use and include two malls, shallow vernal pools to collect stormwater, a prairie area to slow and filter stormwater that flows out of the vernal pools, and several reforested areas.
Williams Creek installed over 5,500 native trees, shrubs, and forbs, along with nearly four acres of native seed and 21 bird and bat houses in the dam area, at the wildflower meadow, vernal pools, parking areas, and along the maintenance path.
